The projects include an Urban Park and Recreation Recovery Program Grant to restore Flynn Pavilion on Belle Isle and reopen it as a canoe/bicycle/skating facility, securing four grants totaling $1.5 million for boardwalk improvements at Elizabeth Park and funding to restore the theater and guard house at the former Fort Wayne.
The river is one of 14 rivers nationwide that has a presidential designation as an American Heritage River. The initiative is a collaboration of municipalities, businesses, federal and state governments, as well as community-based organizations. The initiative helps communities develop and implement a variety of projects to enhance economic development.
