There is a pattern. Most of the deals have been in the west and south—Downriver--portion of the Detroit Metropolitan Area, and most are high-tech developments, says executive vice president Gary Roberts.
"We're doing pretty good in this economy," he tells GlobeSt.com. "We've beenputting on a nice run."
He says there's been a few different reasons for the company's success in the last three months.
A few of the projects, such as adding 86,000 sf to the Contractors Steel building in Van Buren Township, have been with existing clients in sites the company already owns, Roberts says.
DeMattia owns a lot of parcels in tech parks, a business that has also been hurting for the last 18 months, Roberts tells GlobeSt.com. However, sophisticated, high-tech jobs have become more frequent, he adds.
Roberts explains these jobs involve leasing more than 200,000 sf of a building on 24 acres in the Wasthenaw Business Park to Verdian Corp. The national security technology firm signed a lease for two years for its expansion from Ypsilanti Township, he reports.
Other projects include building an expansion for ZF Technologies. The German company is spending approximately $27.8 million on a new research and development facility in Northville Township. The facility will expand the company's research and development capabilities.
Also, DeMattia is building a 100,000-sf operations and call center for Comcast Corp. in a Plymouth industrial park, a second floor to a University of Michigan sports medicine facility in the Domino's Farms site in Ann Arbor Township and a 65,000-sf headquarters and distribution center for Southview Inc. in Romulus.
"Southview is a florist distribution company. The building will present certain challenges," Roberts explains. "You would think carting around flowers would be easy, but you've got to think of temperature, humidity and other controls. It will be an interesting and sophisticated project."
The company already is working on another 185,000 sf of projects that closedbefore August, Roberts adds.
