The owners of Vintage Hills Center, Carlos Chia and Hsiu Hsieh, have voiced their support for Charter Properties' plan to rezone the commercial property for housing, especially since the shopping center has only two remaining tenants, a hair salon and a dry cleaner. The center was built more than 20 years ago and has seen a continuous decline over the past few years.
The developer's plan is to develop 110 condominiums and 38 town homes, as well as 2,600-sf of retail space, at the Vintage Hills Center, a 5-acre site at the corner of Bernal Avenue and Tawny Drive. The total development cost, including the acquisition of the property, is estimated at $3.5 million. The project must be reviewed by the Planning Commission and approved by the City Council.
The project would complement the city's redevelopment plan, which includes additional housing. However, Pleasanton residents have approached the city with concerns about additional traffic that would come with the new development. City officials say that residents would prefer to have another retail project rather than a housing development.
