Nicolls also is co-owner of the 100-room Monarch Lodge.
Previous deals to buy the small ski area west of the town of Salida have collapsed. The ski area currently is owned by Los Angeles-based investor Goodwin Gaw and Melvin Choo of Hong Kong. They bought the resort in 1996 for $6.5 million.
Last year, Monarch booked 138,850 skier visits, a 5.7% drop from the previous season.
