The 45,000-sf Grand Union store, which Stop & Shop will expand to 55,000 sf, is owned by Brattleboro, VT-based grocery supplier C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. The latter acquired most of Grand Union's locations after the latter filed for bankruptcy two years ago.
Work on the new Stop & Shop is expected to begin in February, pending approval of necessary construction permits. Once the store opens, the chain will have a total of 52 units in the Garden State.
South Brunswick Square Mall itself has a total of 30 retail tenants, including co-anchors Macy's (80,000 sf) and a Bloomingdale's Furniture Clearance Center (50,000 sf). Strategic Resources Corp. is also facing the prospect of replacing Bloomingdale's, which announced in late summer that it would close. Bloomingdale's is expected to remain open until a replacement is lined up, according to company officials.
