Operating as part of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, the facility will specialize in genetic and cellular diseases, including autism, childhood cancers and juvenile diabetes.

The complex is being designed by Hillier, the Princeton, NJ-based architectural firm, a specialist in healthcare and scientific facilities. The Child Health Institute marks the firm's second recent project in this Central New Jersey city – the company also designed the new Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Nationally, Hillier has designed some three dozen healthcare facilities, including the landmark Duke University Center for Human Genetics in Durham, NC.
