Tentative development plans for the site, about 10 miles northeast of Downtown Atlanta, are being reviewed by the Atlanta Regional Commission which signs off on all area development projects.
The redevelopment calls for a neighborhood of small houses, parks and retail near Avondale Estates. Retail would occupy the ground floor in buildings up to a maximum four stories. Townhomes, condominiums or apartment units would be developed on the upper floors.
Decatur commissioners adopted the redevelopment plan in 2000 when the Atlanta Regional Commission provided a study grant of $80,000. The suburb added another $20,000. The ARC seeks to reduce air pollution from vehicles while Decatur residents themselves encourage transit-oriented development in their community.
