The project involves a 10-acre site and would include retail and office space as well as a hotel. It is unclear if Karp's firm already owns the property. Calls to New England Development were not returned by press time.

The town representative notes that the company has not yet formally submitted plans to Newton's planning department and she emphasizes that the project is still in its preliminary stages. But she points out that the developer will be working with the planning departments of both Newton and Brookline because of the project's proximity to the Brookline town line.
