Opus West was considering plans for an approximately 700,000-sf retail center of stores and restaurants near Mace Boulevard and Interstate 80. According to city officials, the developer has decided not to pursue its existing plans because they may be too controversial for the city of Davis, which has a history of opposition toward large developments.
Although Opus West has yet to submit its development plans to the city, residents have already began voicing opposition to the project, saying that it is too large. However, city officials contend that local supporters outnumber opponents.
Currently, the majority of Davis residents travel to neighboring cities to shop, as Davis provides little selection in the retail arena. The city remains hopeful that Opus will return with an altered proposal, as a large retail center could significantly boost the city's economy.
