The proposals would transform the town centre, which was devastated by the collapse of the steel industry in the late 1970s, and double its population to 100,000. Catalyst Corby proposes to develop offices, shops, a rail link to London and 28,000 homes.

The company has already entered into a development agreement with BeeBee Developments, a partner in the URC, on a 1,000-acre site to the east of the town. Other bodies with a stake in Catalyst Corby are the East Midlands Development Agency, English Partnerships, local councils and Tops Estates, which owns the existing shopping centre.

The plan is to create a new "civic hub" that will be attractive to commuters travelling daily to London. Most of the funding for the development would come from from private developers.
