This steady, although moderate, growth presents development challenges, said the council in its recent legislative policy platform report. The platform stated that some of the growth will require new residential and commercial facilities, along with the infrastructure required to serve new facilities.
According to the council, this growth should be directed to the current urban areas instead of new green space. "It would be very costly to accommodate all of this projected growth by developing new areas," the report said. "Redevelopment within older, urban areas is key to maintaining our regional quality of life."
The report also said local governments need tools to address the land use challenges facing their individual communities, whether accommodating new growth or redeveloping to accommodate infill growth.Council leaders have adopted policies aimed to improve the state's land assembly process, seek new tools for downtown revitalization, create incentives for smart growth planning and to push for expanded use of the Community Development Block Grant programs.
