Reps. Joe Knollenberg and John Dingell, along with U.S. Sen. Carl Levin,sent a letter to General Services Administrator Steven A. Perry sayinginfrastructure and building improvements need to be made at the crossing.
At the two crossings, leading into Windsor, Ontario, there is inadequateparking, inadequate primary and secondary inspection space, and facilityneeds, the three elected officials said.
"We urge GSA to expedite border enhancements and improvements to safety,security and efficiency," they wrote in the letter. "This includes givingprompt attention to requests to remove infrastructure and upgradetechnology. Michigan's and the nation's security and economic well being areat stake."
The Detroit border crossing has one of the largest foreign traffic volumesin the country.
Almost half of the $1.4 billion in daily trade between the United States andCanada crosses the border in the Detroit area, said Sen. Debbie Stabenow.
"This area should receive the highest consideration for enhancements insafety, security and efficiency," she said.
