The current temporary casino site is on Lafayette, between St. Antoine andBeaubien, in the Downtown area.Plans are to build a 400-room hotel, 100,000 sf of gaming space, as well asrestaurants and retail. It's to be supported by 4,655 parking spaces via twolevels of subsurface parking and a 10-story garage, a 1,500-seat theater, aspa, pool and fitness center. The complex is still in the early stages of the design process.
The company wants to rezone the property, which currently contains a PublicLighting Department facility, a Wayne State University building and surfaceparking lots, from general business and planned unit zoning to casinozoning.
The city staff noted various constraints, such as a loss of open space onthe small site, and the requirement of the nearby Wayne County Jail to sharethe parking garage. The commission also said designs should include ways toincorporate the downtown, not a drive-in, drive-out facility.
Martin Beatty of Greektown said the project would be pleasing to the eye,not a Las Vegas design. The design allows for the expansion of approximately 25,000-sf of hotelspace to accommodate another 400 rooms.Beatty told the commission that there are still no plans for the $150 milliontemporary casino. He said developers will be involved with the mayor'soffice and the city's planning and development department to attracttenants, and in the meantime the building will be maintained. The rezoning was taken under advisement.
