The £36 million ($56.7 million) shed will be located on a site adjacent to the company's existing UK base. The site had been earmarked in the regional plan for housing development but a consent for a change of use has been secured. But this is conditional on the sale of the site of existing distribution sheds for housing development once the new distribution hub has been built.

The locating of a major distribution hub in the south-west of the country is unusual because motorway and rail access is not as good as in the Midlands or around the M25. But Clarks has always been based in the west country and the company is keen to keep its roots there.

Apart from Clarks, the other major industries in the west country have centred around defence and aerospace. The announcement that Clarks is to make a major investment in the region will be a boost to the local economy.
