The 3.25-acre (1.3ha) headquarters site, located on a prominent position on Kensington High Street and overlooking Holland Park, is held on a long lease from one of London's richest private landowners, the Ilchester Estate. The 100,000-sf exhibition and conference centre will be surplus to requirements once the Institute moves to Cambridge.

The building is listed, making it unlikely any potential purchaser would get consent for redevelopment, but the rest of the site is undeveloped. Even so it remains one of London's most popular conference location and local agents believes sensitive redevelopment could unlock the high land values.

The Institute is currently in talks with Cambridge University about a joint venture and a vote on the move is expected shortly. If this goes ahead as expected DTZ will then be given the go-ahead to begin formally marketing the building.
