The number-two finisher was the city auditor, Don Mares, who garnered about 22% of the vote. Hickenlooper received the largest number of votes ever in a general election where none of the candidates received more than 50% of the vote.
Hickenlooper owns seven restaurants and bars in Denver. It's been 30 years since Denver has had a mayor who has been a business owner. Hickenlooper opened the first brewpub in Denver, the Wynkoop Brewing Co., in the 1980s, after he lost his job as a geologist.
Mares, who is an attorney, is attacking Hickenlooper for becoming a millionaire with the help of low-interest loans from the city.Hickenlooper responds by saying that Mares doesn't understand how economic development works.
Hickenlooper and Mares will face each in a runoff on June 3.
