The centre includes 30,000 sf of offices but has primarily been designed for the storage and distribution of chilled and frozen goods and features four separate temperature controlled storage areas. Asda, which like Gazeley is owned by Wal-Mart, is modernising its distribution network throughout the UK and the Falkirk centre is intended to service Asda stores throughout Scotland.
The £27 million ($43.8 million) facility is located on a previously derelict site near Alcan works on David's Loan, about a mile from Asda's existing Grangemouth warehouse. The new centre will operate in conjunction with the Grangemouth unit, which is being converted.
Gazeley, Asda's wholly owned property development subsidiary, used its joint venture main contractors, GSE and Simons construction work and fit out. Asda has taken occupation of the building which became fully operational this week.
