Of the approximately 2.99 million Southland residents that are expected to travel this holiday, about 2.4 million of them will drive, according to the Auto Club's predictions. As the researchers point out, "The Auto Club's AAA Travel survey of top Memorial Day getaway destinations is a reflection of travelers' desire to stay close to home." The top five spots for Southern Californians are Las Vegas, San Francisco, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Yosemite National Park, according to the survey.

Statewide, "an estimated 4.8 million Californians are projected to drive, fly, sail or ride to holiday destinations this weekend," the Auto Club researchers say. This number reflects a 1.4% increase from last year, although there is a decrease of almost 5% in the number of California travelers flying to their destinations.
