The project, designed by architects RNL Design and built by DL Withers Construction Co., both of Phoenix, opened last week at the corner of Greenfield and Virginia between McDowell and Loop 202. Set on 23 acres, the Mesa Transit Maintenance Facility is comprised of a five-building, 96,028-sf campus with a 21,000-sf administrative office and operations building serving as its hub. Separate buildings include quarters for fare retrieval, automated wash and brake inspection and a maintenance building for the transit department's parts, storage and transportation support areas. The project also features additional space for expanded bus parking to support future population growth.

But the project's key feature is its state-of-the-art compressed natural gas system, the largest in the nation, which offers compression storage and distribution for the facility's refueling operation. The $13.6-million cost of the project was funded by the city of Mesa and the federal government.
