Proposals for the 29-acre (11.73ha) include over 1,400 homes, offices, leisure facilities, shops and restaurants and 1m sq ft (92,900 sq m) of parks and gardens. EP has already secured planning consent for it. The development site includes the run-down council housing estate built in the 1970s which is only half occupied, the former Ancoats Hospital adjacent to the Ashton Canal, the former St Jude's Primary School and a former industrial site next to the Rochdale Canal.
Duncan Innes, head of Millennium Communities, English Partnerships, said: "This announcement marks the final 'green light' for the development of the New Islington Millennium Community." He added that the plans "bring together new methods of planning, design and construction to transform this run-down estate into a vibrant new sustainable community."
