Development space is at a premium in the District, but there isample room for the DOT's new headquarters at the 55-acre SoutheastFederal Center along the Anacostia River. The complex will occupytwo city blocks on 11 acres at the campus. Designed by acclaimedarchitect Michael Graves of Princeton, NJ-headquartered MichaelGraves & Associates, the DOT headquarters will feature anine-story tower and an eight-story tower, which will sport avisual continuity to each other via their centrally placed atriums.The property will also feature an underground parking structurewith the capacity to accommodate about 1,000 vehicles.

"This project represents a consolidation of several DOT officelocations, as well as a replacement for the current headquartersbuilding, the Nassif building, at the corner of 7th and D streets,"GSA spokesman Michael McGill explains in a conversation withGlobeSt.com. "This will the first new cabinet-level headquartersbuilding developed by GSA in 25 years." The project is due to reachcompletion mid-year 2006, at which point JBG/SEFC will lease thefacility back to the GSA.
