Golfsmith president Jim Thompson says the acquisition of the biggest golf chain in a top golf market like the Bay Area is part of the company's ongoing strategy to establish "a formidable presence in major markets throughout the United States."
The acquisition also gives Golfsmith an instant presence in the complementary market of tennis retail. The value of the transaction was not released by the parties involved and was not otherwise available. Golfsmith's Andrew Craig did not return a phone call seeking comment on the size of the Don Sherwood locations and whether those locations are owned or leased.
Golfsmith stores range in size from 10,000 - 30,000 sf and are located in the following 13 markets: Atlanta (three); Austin (two); Chicago (four); Columbus, Ohio; Dallas (three); Denver (two); Detroit (three); Houston (two); Los Angeles (five); Minneapolis; Morristown, N.J.; Phoenix (two) and San Francisco (six). In addition to its retail stores, Golfsmith also publishes catalogs and has an Internet store.
