The site currently consists of parcels that have been vacant for 35 years. The city says the project is consistent with the vision outlined in the mayor-appointed Blue Hill Avenue Task Force's 1996 report.

"The city and the community both agree that this project will be a welcome addition to this neighborhood by providing much needed housing to families who need it the most," says Mayor Thomas M. Menino.

The project is part of Menino's Leading the Way housing initiative. The city says that another 508 parcels will be offered for affordable housing projects over the next three years.
