The possibility of a move was mooted in a feasibility study carried out by Donaldsons on behalf of the department. A list of specific sites is expected next month.
The Home Office is expected to pay around £30 ($47) per sq ft for offices and this is likely to bring Land Securities' St Christopher's House and Sainsbury's 10 Blackfriars Road into the frame.
The new offices will house staff displaced by the Home Office's immigration service, which is moving into the department's new Marsham Street office.
