10/01/03: Much has been made about theexporting of white-collar jobs overseas, and this is a real problemwhen job growth is essential to maintaining this economic"recovery." Since real estate itself can't be exported, many of thefunctions required to maintain it will remain here. However, thereare many jobs outside this particular function that are in dangerof--quite literally--going away. According to the US Department ofLabor and Forrester Research, more than three million jobs willmove offshore by 2015. Surprisingly, architecture-oriented work isexpected to move approximately 185,000 jobs to foreign soil in thattime. Think about this for a moment. Better living throughtechnology has brought us to the point where a commercial building,office space, single-family homes, shopping centers andhotels--located anyplace in the nation--can all be designed halfway across the globe--and done so for less than half the cost thatwould be incurred here. This is a definite trend. But is itprogress?
