A representative of Haverhill's city council tells GlobeSt.com that the council granted GFI a special permit to build a residential development on the site. In July, the council voted to rezone 52 acres of the site in the rear of the parcel to allow for residential use. The remainder of the property maintained its zoning for educational use.
Calls to GFI were not returned by deadline, but a spokesperson for the company has previously told GlobeSt.com that the company plans to put an educational user back in the 300,000 sf of space. The city council representative says that the company has not yet found anyone interested in using the site for educational purposes. The college was housed in seven buildings which a GFI spokesperson had said will remain.
