It started out with 11 submittals from developers for the project that will take place when the health sciences center moves to the Fitzsimons medical center and biotechnology park in Aurora in 2007.
The four finalists include:
· Locally based Archstone-Smith, one of the largest apartment real estate investments in the country, specializes in developing high-end communities in areas with great barriers to entry.
· Etkin-Johnson Group, one of the largest private commercial real estate investment and development companies based in the city. It has a portfolio of five million sf.
· Koll Development Co. of Newport Beach, CA, has at least three projects in Colorado, including the 156,000-sf FedEx center in Colorado Springs. It has developed more than 85 million sf across the country.
· Shea Properties was developer of Highlands Ranch in Douglas County, the largest master-planned community in the state, as well as the fledgling Rendezvous in Commerce City.
A three-member committee chaired by Tim Romani, vice chancellor for planning and development at CU-Health Sciences Center, selected the four finalists. The other members of the selection panel were John Huggins, director of economic development for the City and County of Denver, and Steve Golding, VP of the University of Colorado.
"We were delighted to have such a highly qualified group of developers express interest in the redevelopment of our campus," Romani says. "I am grateful to each of the 11 responding firms and found each to be exceptionally qualified. We look forward to receiving proposals from the four finalists early next year and ultimately selecting a redevelopment partner."
The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center is one of four campuses in the University of Colorado system. Located in Denver and Aurora, the center includes schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and dentistry, a graduate school and a teaching hospital.
