The Lewisham Gatweay site consists of eight acres of land immediately to the north of the Lewisham Shopping Centre. Significantly, Slough Estates—owner of the Lewisham Shopping Centre—has been overlooked even though it reportedly bid for the site.
The London Development Agency envisages up to 500,000 sf of new development on the site with a mix of retail, residential and commercial space along with an enhanced transport interchange to improved linkages to the town.
The scheme is one of 10 projects being piloted as part of Mayor of London Ken Livingstone's 'Making Space for Londoners' plan. The initiative aims to transform 100 of London's key public spaces. Development is expected to begin in 2006.
