In a recent unanimous vote, planning officials approved Wal-Mart's plan to build a "supercenter" at Arizona and Pecos Road on a site straddling the future Santan Freeway. Plans for the site also include a Sam's Club along with several smaller retailers and restaurants. Final approval of those plans is expected to come from city council at a Dec. 16 meeting. The store would be the first "supercenter" for Wal-Mart in Chandler, which also has a Wal-Mart located at Alma School and Warner roads.

Neighborhood opposition scuttled two earlier proposals by the retail giant and prompted city council to tighten its big box ordinance that requires large stores to be at least 1,500 feet from existing homes. The latest proposal faced no neighborhood opposition.
