Building the facility, which will be available for use for the region's scientific community, is part of an effort to create a center of life sciences expertise in the Detroit-Ann Arbor-Kalamazoo corridor.

The Michigan Life Sciences Corridor initiative was launched by Gov. John Engler and has been carried on by current Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

Development of the corridor is hoped to encourage the formation of new companies that create jobs in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
