The Lake Calumet Planned Manufacturing District, recommended for approval recently by the plan commission, would include the $88-million Ford Supplier Park as well as the $88-million Solo Cup factory.

While the city and state have vowed to spend $250 million on infrastructure in the area, $198 million is expected to be spent over the next 23 years through tax increment financing.

Manufacturers paying high wages could be threatened by encroaching residential and commercial development and redevelopment if the area was not designated as a planned manufacturing district, according to department of planning and development officials. The area is one of the city's largest industrial areas, planners note.
