The district obtained a 37-acre parcel of farmland through condemnation, and a court had decided the district should pay the property owners about $3 million. But the owners, the Jordan family, appealed the court's decision on the purchase price and for damages incurred. After a mediated settlement was reached last fall, the district has agreed to pay an additional $1 million for the property.
The Minnesota legislature appropriated $22.8 million in bonding funds from 1998 to 2002 for land acquisition, predesign, design, furnishing and equipment. Construction was supported by state dollars, rather than local funding, because the East Metro Integration District is not a typical school district. The Jordans argued the land, located on the shores of Battle Creek Lake, is prime property.
