Schostak plans to demolish the 900,000-sf mall and a nearby vacant Kmart store of about 100,000 sf into a development featuring clusters of specialty shops and restaurants, backed by several anchors, in an open development called Wonderland Village Center.
Mark London, Schostak's vice president of leasing, tells GlobeSt.com that having the anchors in place is critical to moving the project forward. A Target store now at the mall will remain as one anchor and London says Schostak wants "two or three" additional anchors with stores about the same size as a Target. The existing Kmart store will be renovated to accommodate a new anchor, London says.
Wonderland Mall was built as an open mall in 1959, with Montgomery Ward as an anchor. It also included two more now-defunct chains: Winkelman's women's clothing, and Hughes and Hatcher for men and boys.
