The area is contaminated with a common dry-cleaning solvent, petroleum-related compounds and other dangerous materials. It was added to the state's Superfund list in 1998.

The cleanup is being funded by grants from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, the Metropolitan Council and Hennepin County. The MPCA will be accepting public comment on the proposed cleanup until April 30.

The Metropolitan Council awarded $502,000 to help address soil contamination at the site of the former dry-cleaning facility and gasoline station. Redevelopment plans proposed by the Whittier neighborhood include a variety of commercial uses, 15 housing units and surface parking.
