The village acquired the property, which the Lake County assessor's office valued at $400,000, but declared it uninhabitable. Even the village's fire department took a pass on using the building, built in 1920, for a training exercise.

Until a developer's plan is approved for the site, the land a block east of the village's namesake lake will be seeded. However, the five- to seven-year redevelopment program is expected to begin later this year.

Next on the village's hit list is its former police station across the street from the Farman Hotel site.

Downtown redevelopment is expected to create a "resort town" feel along Main Street, with mixed-use buildings offering first-floor retail storefronts and multifamily units on upper floors.
