The 450-vehicle garage will complement the historic character of other Downtown buildings and have retail space at street-level. RACP is a commonwealth grant program administered by the office of the budget for the acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic and historical improvement projects. In handing out the check, Gov. Ed Rendell said, "funding for this garage will create jobs and bring new revenue and investment to Norristown." Additional funding for the facility will come from federal, state, Montgomery County and private sources.
During his visit, Rendell also encouraged Norristown to apply for funds from the state's new Hometown Streets Program. It is a joint venture between the Department of Community and Economic Development and the Department of Transportation (PennDOT). Designed to encourage reinvestment and development in Pennsylvania's downtowns, it provides funding for such enhancements as sidewalk improvements, street lighting, transit shelters, bicycle paths and pedestrian crossings.
