Sysco entered into an agreement to acquire the land from Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp. in July 2001, subject to delivery of a clean, cleared site. Since then, PIDC oversaw the demolition of an unused city incinerator there along with environmental remediation and site improvements. It also managed approvals and legislation required by the state's Department of Environmental Protection and the Philadelphia City Council. The clean-up was funded with an infrastructure development grant from the state's Department of Community and Economic Development.
Currently Sysco employs 521 at its food distribution center here. Following completion of the expansion, it will hire approximately 200 more workers. Sysco operates from 146 locations throughout North America. It generated $26.1 billion in sales in 2003.
