Atlanta-based Hedgewood Properties Inc. plans 60,000 sf of retail and restaurant space to complement an undetermined number of townhomes and condominium flats scheduled to start construction this month, area brokers familiar with the project tell GlobeSt.com. Home prices are expected to be in the $200,000 to $300,000 range.

Woodstock officials say they began preparing for their city's rebirth in 2002 when the municipality qualified for a $75,000 grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission's Livable Centers Initiative. The money was used to create a development plan for the area. Now Woodstock has qualified for another $1.1 million to move forward with its plan.

Ranked as the fastest-growing city in Cherokee County, Woodstock officials are considering a 90-day moratorium on proposed new developments while they review the area's growth options, brokers and city planners confirm to GlobeSt.com.

The last passenger train came through Woodstock in the late 1940s, a city hall staffer tells GlobeSt.com. Downtown Woodstock today houses three commercial buildings, a dormant train depot and churches on the west side of Main Street. Hedgewood's project will create an east side to the city and possibly a new bedroom community for Downtown Atlanta's commuting core, area brokers tell GlobeSt.com.
