Tanner's property management career started in 1971 in New York, overseeing the family's real estate holdings. He later joined Webb, Brooks and Brooker, also in New York. Tanner enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1976 and was transferred to Orlando in 1983 when he became property manager for all Marine Corps' real estate assets in Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

Tanner left the Marines in 1988 and worked fulltime for Miami-based Howbernel Realty Co. until the death of the company's owners in 1993. At that time, Tanner retired until last year when he joined Vance Realty as a general real estate broker.
