The first phase of construction will include the 4,800-seat pavilion, an interpretive center/museum and events gallery, permanent outdoor event structures, parking and infrastructure. Construction on the project is expected to take two years to complete.

When the center opens in July 2006, Bethel Woods will feature venues for classical music as well as pop and rock and an interpretive center/museum recognizing the historic nature of the location, according to officials with The Gerry Foundation, which is the developer of the project.

Alan Gerry, founder of Cablevision and president of the Gerry Foundations said at the groundbreaking ceremony, "Today we are beginning construction of a special place that will honor our history, celebrate our future and assist our county and region. In just two years we will be joined by thousands of people as the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts opens."

Funding for the center comes from the Gerry Foundation, as well as $15 million in support from Empire State Development Corp. and other state agencies. Local and state political officials who attended the groundbreaking event said that the Bethel Woods project will create a first class performing arts venue that will provide a much-needed boost to the Sullivan County tourism industry.
