In addition, 15 parcels scattered along 59th Street between Peoria and Racine avenues could be had for $20,000 to $200,000, according to the department of planning and development, which got permission to advertise the properties Tuesday from the community development commission. Preferred projects on 59th Street would include buildings with storefronts with residential units above. A request for proposals is expected to be issued this week, with responses due back in November.

New housing has been built about three blocks east of 63rd and Halsted streets, while a new Kennedy-King City College campus is rising immediately south of the intersection. However, retail development has been scarce in the neighborhood, and the department of planning and development hopes the land sales spur new developments in the area, says project manager Michelle Nolan.

However, the department will encourage uses such as a coffee shop and bank branch in addition to a grocery store at 63rd and Halsted, Nolan says, while storage facilities, pay-day loan offices and Dollar stores will be discouraged.

Some retail development has occurred along 59th Street, including a Leon's restaurant and Citgo service station.
