It will be built next to the Detroit Medical Center's Harper University Hospital. About a year ago, Karmanos began exploring the process of splitting off from the nonprofit DMC. The move is described by both sides as "amicable."
The moves mean that Karmanos "goes from being a DMC subsidiary to DMC's full and equal partner," says Karmanos chief executive Dr. John Ruckdeschel. Karmanos spent $105 million in the 1990s to renovate inpatient floors at Harper, where it manages cancer care for the Detroit Medical Center.
As a stand-alone cancer center, Karmanos expects to attract additional government funds and private donations. Karmanos' hospital now sees about 10,000 new cancer patients yearly, and researchers there are working on more than 300 clinical cancer studies.
