09/29/04: There was bad news, shocking news, rippling through the business community last week--the bankruptcy-protection filing by Interstate Bakeries. In case you're not aware, Interstate Bakeries is the maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread. The reason for the move is two-fold. First, there were expense woes from rising energy and healthcare costs. Then there was the low-carb diet fad, which runs counter to enjoying your Twinkie in peace or building your body in 12 ways. Interstate operates 57 facilities and employs more than 33,000 people, many of whom will probably lose their jobs. There are many reasons for loss of business.But one has to question if the sales decline was not somehow related to an inability to innovate in a time of changing habits and needs. If so, this is an issue that applies to any company at any time. It's not just about cream filling.

(WEST PALM BEACH, FL) Lee Tomback has been named leasing director of the company's Florida operations. Tomback most recently served as vice president and leasing manager at Florida East Coast Realty in Miami.

( BOSTON ) Alan Bednowitz has come on board as vice president, sales and marketing. Bednowitz will run sales and marketing initiatives at the company's 38 hotels. He was most recently vice president of sales at Starcite Inc.
