The church began its reconfiguration process in January 2004, resulting in the closing of 80 parishes and 67 churches to date. On Nov. 15, the Archdiocese put 16 churches on the block, with a 90-day period for interested parties to submit bids. The Archdiocese would then evaluate the proposals before the sale process began. On Jan. 5, the Archdiocese added four more closed churches with a fresh 90-day bidding period. At that time, a spokesperson for the church told GlobeSt.com that the 90-day process would now be a minimum only and that it was an "open market."
"This open market solicitation process will ideally allow us to maximize financial considerations consistent with the needs of the communities which we serve," David W. Smith, chancellor for the Archdiocese.
The sale process has resulted in only a few concrete offers to date, but brokers for the properties say that the interest level has been high. "There's been a ton of interest," Lisa Campoli, senior VP at Meredith & Grew told GlobeSt.com for an earlier report. "We just don't expect bids until the end of the month." An Archdiocese spokesperson reiterated that they would have no response to the sale process "until a sale is complete."
