Initially, the aerospace and defense giant says it will include about 200 people from its Denver Tech Center office and 150 new hires, with enough space available to grow into. Currently, the company, based in Waltham, MA, employs 2,650 here.

Raytheon's 45-acre Aurora campus already includes four buildings. The local operation makes software and ground-processing systems for communicating with satellites, as well as building ground stations. Its Aurora unit is leading a team bidding on a $2-billion contract involving high-capacity, satellite communications networks for the military.

The company will receive $980,000 in incentives from Colorado's Office of Economic Development, as well as more modest ones from the Aurora Economic Development Council and the City of Aurora.

Local experts say the typical salaries for the aerospace engineers average between $70,000 and $80,000. Each primary job also creates about 2.5 secondary jobs, which typically pay an average salary of about $40,000.
