Many Downtown hotels last year at this time were running at 50% occupancy. Also, the President's Day weekend is a time when many Front Range residents take off for the mountains for a long weekend of skiing, leaving Downtown even more devoid of people than normal.

But there will plenty to do this weekend. In addition to the games, Nike reportedly is spending about $750,000 to build a private nightclub at 1825 Market St. in LoDo for Michael Jordan, the former Chicago Bulls' great. The nightclub will be dismantled after the event.

Richard Scharf, president of the Denver Metro Convention & Visitors' Bureau, recently told the Denver City Council that the event could pump $30 million into the local economy. Money not only will be spent in hotels, but in restaurants and shops. In fact, there was a short-lived move by some to allow bars to stay open until 4 a.m. instead of 2 a.m., to keep cash registers ringing at Downtown parties. However, that move was shot down by city officials before it gained any momentum.
