At Gables, Wheeler says he will continue his role "of providing strategic guidance to the senior management team." In taking the CEO post, Fitch is also appointed to Gables' board of trustees.

Meanwhile, Gables has retained FPL Associates to help search for an additional independent trustee to fill the post vacated earlier this year by Mike Miles, who resigned. The company's strategic objective, Wheeler says, is "to produce total returns that exceed the apartment sector average."

At WCI, Starkey replaces Al Hoffman Jr. as CEO, who retires from that post and is elected chairman of the board, replacing Don Ackerman, previous board chairman, who will continue to serve on the board of directors. Starkey has been with WCI and its predecessor company, Florida Design Communities, since 1988. He has served on the WCI board since May 2001.
