McWhinney is developing the 3,000-acre Centerra development in Loveland. "I'll be heavily involved in working with other builders to bring them into the community," Whiton, who was president of Lennar/US Home Colorado form 1981 to 2004, tells GlobeSt.com. "I'll be involved in the design and infrastructure issues. But the really fun part about it, is that it is not just housing. It also is commercial and retail development. Right now, I'm working on a Motorplex and working with bringing on all of these automobile dealerships and related stores here. This is an opportunity to create a real, overall community with shopping and offices, and light office, and of, course, housing. I just bought a house in Centerra that is four minutes from my office."
Lennar/US Home, while primarily a homebuilder, in the past also had bought large tracts of land in the Denver area that had portions devoted to commercial developments, which Whiton would spin off to developers. "It's been fascinating learning more about commercial development," Whiton tells GlobeSt.com. "But in a broader scope, there's not that much difference. A sewer pipe is a sewer pipe and a water pipe is a water pipe. It's not really any different if you're putting in front of it a house or an office building."
