BUFORD, GA-This Gwinnett County city with an estimated permanent population of 15,000 is about to grow its tax base once again with confirmation from Memphis-based FedEx Freight that the company plans to build a 36-acre, 125-door, 77,000-sf service center at the 300-acre Hamilton Mill Business Center owned by Atlanta-based IDI.
FedEx Freight officials couldn't be reached to learn the estimated development cost of the center. However, local construction industry sources familiar with comparable projects, tell GlobeSt.com the project will probably come in at a hard construction cost of $10 million. The center, near the 1.9-million-sf Mall of Georgia, will consist of an undetermined amount of office space, loading docks and shop areas.
County planning department staffers confirm the center will focus on pickups and deliveries in the northeastern metro area. FedEx Freight's main regional center is in Conley, GA, southeast of Atlanta in Clayton County. The Buford center is expected to reduce transit times for the company.
FedEx Freight, a subsidiary of FedEx, has opened five other service centers in various locations this year. There are 330 FedEx Freight service centers nationwide.
