ORLANDO-The Orlando Municipal Planning Board has approved two mixed-use projects on sites of former local landmarks. The two unrelated ventures could have a total estimated hard construction cost of $75 million, local construction industry sources tell GlobeSt.com.

Pelloni Development Corp. of suburban Lake Mary plans 80,000 sf of retail and restaurant space along with 564 apartments at the former 70-year-old, 14-acre Mills & Nebraska Lumber Yard, 1602 N. Mills Ave., a heavily trafficked retail neighborhood about two miles east of Downtown. The project could also include a hotel, Pelloni has told the planners.

Houston-based Camden Property Trust plans 30,000 sf of office space, 7,183 of retail and 253 apartments at the former Orange Court Hotel site, 650 N. Orange Ave. Both sites have been ripe for redevelopment for the past 10 years, city planning department staffers tell GlobeSt.com.

Tom and Bridget Pulsifier, two of the owners of the former Mills & Nebraska Lumber company, had their property rezoned in 1993 to allow retail and office development which didn't arrive until this year. The Orange Court Hotel was one of the first in Orlando to have a steam-heated swimming pool when it opened its 275 rooms in March 1924, according to local historians. The Spanish Revival-style building was demolished in 1990.
